An Island hopping adventure in Cape Verde: Sao Vicente, Santo Antao, Fogo, Santiago and Sal - trip info

  • PASSEPORT & ADMINISTRATIVE DOCUMENTS
. A passport valid 6 months after the date of exit from Cape Verde is required with at least two blank pages.
. From 1 January 2019, Citizens of EU, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and the UK can enter Cape Verde as a visitor for stays of up to 30 days without a visa. However there is an Airport Security Tax (TSA) to pay. Before your departure, you must check in online and pay an airport security fee of 3400 Cape Verdean escudos (approximately €30) at www.ease.gov.cv. At the end of your check-in, once the fee has been paid, you will instantly receive a confirmation email with a file number. Print out this document to present it to the authorities upon arrival at the airport.
If you do not receive your check-in confirmation, you can request it (in English) from: ease-support@cv.zetes.com (we advise you to add the payment confirmation to your email). We advise you to do this at least 5 days before your departure.
. All other nationalities do need a Visa. Please consult the relevant Consulate/Embassy of your country of origin.
. We advise you to also bring a photocopy of your original documents and keep them with you during your trip separate to the original ones.

  • HEALTH INFORMATION
. Compulsory vaccinations : No vaccination is required. However, vaccination against yellow fever becomes compulsory if you have previously stayed in or transited through a country located in an endemic zone, which may concern travellers arriving from Senegal. It must be done at least 10 days before departure.

. Recommended vaccinations :  we strongly recommend that you are up to date with the classic vaccinations: diphtheria-tetanus-polio +/-pertussis, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.

. Malaria prevention : It is possible to do without medication, except on the island of Santiago during the winter rains (from July to October) where the (low) risk can be prevented by taking Nivaquine (or similar - consult your doctor). Protection against mosquitoes, through repellents, impregnated mosquito nets and covering clothing, during the day and at night, is all the more essential as it will also protect against other insects that are vectors of other parasitic or viral diseases in particular Dengue fever or the Zika virus.

. Zika virus : Transmitted by the same mosquito as dengue and chikungunya, the disease was not considered serious (fever, rash, joint pain, cured in a week) until the outbreak of the epidemic in Brazil, when severe neurological complications appeared in newborns of mothers who had been in contact with the Zika virus. The risk of microcephalies, a source of severe handicaps for the child, leads us, in accordance with the recommendations just published by the High Council of Public Health, to advise pregnant women, or women planning to become pregnant, to postpone their trip or to consult their doctor to validate their travel plans.

. Food & water risks: It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps as stomach bugs can occur. Water scarcity and quality is one of the major problems of the Cape Verde archipelago. We advise you to systematically treat tap water with purification tablets or a filter bottle. Alternatively you can also easily buy 1.5 L bottled mineral water (or 5L bottles).
. We also advise not to eat fruit or vegetable that has not been pelled or boiled.

. Animal risks: there are no dangerous animals in Cape Verde. There are a few inoffensive monkeys in the north of Santiago. However, one should be wary of the bark beetle (or Sampe for one hundred feet) which can be found all over the archipelago and whose bite pain can last a few days.

. Although there are health centres on every island as well as hospitals and private clinics in the big cities such as Praia or Mindelo, the medical infrastructure remains insufficient for more serious problems. It is therefore strongly recommended to take out repatriation insurance.

    IMPORTANT COVID19 – update 17/02/2021
    Entry requirements to Cape Verde
. When planning your trip to Cape Verde, it is important to know the local regulations in force in terms of prevention and containment of COVID-19. Passengers flying to Cape Verde archipelago will be subject to one of the following options:
    1. Prior to your travel you will need to complete an International Travel Form on the Covid19.cv website. You need to complete it online and submit it prior to your travel.
    2. Have to present a negative PCR or antigen test to COVID-19 carried out within 72 hours before embarkation
    3. If you do not present a COVID-19 test done in the last 72 hours, you will not be allowed to disembark.
=> Click here to find more info about Cape Verde regulation

    Inter-island travel :
. With the exception of travel between the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão, some inter-island travel is conditional on the presentation of an antigenic or serological test of less than 72 hours, with negative results, which can be carried out in the health delegations (Delegacias de Saúde), at a cost of 1 000 escudos per person (approximately €10 per person). It is necessary to make an appointment at the platform  https://agendamento.covid19.cv/.
. You will also need to complete an online health surveillance form.

    Preparing your return journey :
. It is your responsibility to check the conditions of return to your country of origin (negative PCR test, quarantine, etc.).
. If you need to present a negative PCR test to return to your country, it is possible to carry out this test in one of the health agencies on the islands of Santiago, Sao Vicente and Santo Antao.
. The PCR test costs 6500 escudos per person (approximately 60 € per person). The results are obtained within a minimum of 24 hours (hand-delivered, no email yet possible).

.  In a general way, it is your responsibility to also check with the competent authorities in your country of residence what the rules are for leaving and returning home :

  • WEATHER
. The climate in Cape Verde is tropical dry. Cape Verde has two seasons :
      - the rainy season between July and the end of September / beginning of October. It is also the hottest season with a temperature around 30°. It is not advisable to hike during this period.
      - the dry season, between October and June, is the best time to travel to Cape Verde. The average temperature is 25°.
. Cape Verde, also called "The Windward Islands", has a particularly strong wind between December and March.
. The ocean temperature varies from 21° in winter to 26°C in summer. But be aware : it is not possible to swim everywhere in the archipelago (contact us for more information on this subject).
. We recommend the weather websites: http://www.meteociel.fr/ + name of the town

  • ELECTRICITY
. Voltage: 220-240V. We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items on:http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

  • MOBILE PHONE & INTERNET
. Depending on the operator in your home country, calls can be expensive. If your phone is unlocked, it is therefore advisable to get a local Sim card (on sale at the airport when you arrive) or even buy a phone and its Sim card (between €10 and €15). This will cost you less for local calls.
. Wifi connections are available everywhere (hotels, bars and restaurants, ferry, airport etc...) including village squares, although the speeds are often random. If you want to make sure you have continuous internet access, then we advise you to buy a local 3G key.

  • MONEY MATTERS – TIPPING – CLOSING TIME
. The currency is the Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE).
    . Exchange rate (indicative rate): 1 € = 110 CVE; 1 CVE = 0.009 €.
. The Cape Verdean escudo can only be changed on the spot and cannot be taken out of the country. Before leaving Cape Verde, the exchange office at the airport collects your escudos to change them into euros.
. Credit cards are accepted in shops and accommodation in town but not in remote mountain areas such as Santo Antao, the Caldeira de Fogo, Sao Nicolau, Brava. It is best to leave with cash and change into local currency on arrival or withdraw cash at the counter. Euros is well accepted evrywhere.
. There are ATMs in all major cities: Mindelo (Sao Vicente), Porto Novo, Vila das Pombas, Ribeira Grande, Ponta do Sol (Santo Antao), Praia (Santiago), Santa Maria and Espargos (Sal), Sao Felipe (Fogo). You will also find ATMs in all the international airports, namely Sao Vicente, Sal and Praia.
. Banks are open only in the mornings, from 8am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.
. Tipping is not included in the restaurants / bars. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service.
