Itinerary

Day 1 - Flight to São Tomé Island, Mucumbli

Arrival in São Tomé. Transfer from the airport to the north of the island (45 mins). The bungalows of Mucumbli lodge overlook the ocean in the middle of exuberant vegetation, a small paradise frequented by many multicolored birds. A small path leads down to the beach.

Meals included: no meal included (diner possible at the accommodation)
Night: Neves

Day 2 - Cocoa plantations

Meet with your driver-guide and presentation of your trip.
You follow the cobbled paths of the plantations to discover the "shadow forest" which is home to the cocoa trees, the breadfruit, the jackfruit and the "prata" banana. Visit to the cocoa maceration and drying facilities in the Generosa, Ponta Figo and Monteforte roça; "village" type plantations with their restaurants smelling of sugar cane, their churches or the remains of hospitals. We descend to the fishing village of Néves, passing by the beach and along the coast through banana and coconut groves. As we cross the Neves River, we will mingle with the inhabitants who come to wash their clothes and chat.

Walk: Mucumbli loop | between 4h and 5h | 10 km - 6 miles | Elevation : +/-400m
Meals included: Breakfast & picnic
Night: Neves

Day 3 - Monte Café

Transfer to Monte Café, the largest historic plantation on the island. The hike passes through medium-altitude forests and provides many botanical and ornithological observations. There are also many encounters with the locals in the annex plantations of Bemposta and Chamiço before returning to visit the Coffee Museum, where you can discover the stages of coffee cultivation and processing, all the way to the creation of the legendary beverage.

Walk: Monte Café loop  2h30 | 7 km - 4.3 miles | Elevation : +/-300m
Meals included: Breakfast &  lunch & dinner
Night: Monte Café

Day 4 - Primary forest of the Obo Natural Park

Transfer to the edge of the Obo National Park. This park, which covers 30% of the territory between Sao Tome and Principe, is home to all the biotopes of the archipelago. From the Bom Successo Botanical Garden (1100m), we start a rather steep climb to Lagoa Amelia at 1483m, an ancient crater lake, now filled with a carpet of vegetation and lined with giant begonias. Continue through the primary forest by the "path of the fugitives" which evokes the escaped slaves who sometimes took refuge in the mountainous and wild part of the island: bamboos, mosses, hundred-year-old and disproportionately large trees, lianas, wild orchids... This dense equatorial vegetation is a refuge of biodiversity and a real pharmacopoeia. Return to Bom Sucesso and transfer back to Monte Café.

Walk: Bom Sucesso loop 4h30 Elevation : +/-710m
Meals included: Breakfast & picnic & dinner
Night:  Monte Café

Day 5 - Drive south with stops in Agua Izé and São João d'Angolares

Transfer to the south of the island. Stop at the Roça d'Agua Izé, one of the most important plantations on the island. One of the imposing buildings from which the railways used to collect cocoa is now used to display handicrafts or works of art. A walking tour allows you to go up to the old hospital which offers a view of the nearby coast. Continue to Sao Joao de Angolares. After lunch at the Roça restaurant with an esplanade overlooking the bay, a visit to the outbuildings is a must, some dedicated to agricultural activities and others to culture, as the plantation is also a cultural centre and an exhibition space for Sao Tome and Principe artists.
The route continues south, passing through palm and ylang-ylang forests from which spectacular sugar loaves emerge. Accommodation for 2 nights in beachfront bungalows.

Walk: Cultural tour
Meals included: Breakfast & lunch & dinner
Night:  Porto Alegre

Day 6 - Coastal rainforest and Mangrove boat tour

This day is dedicated to the diversity and beauty of the very well?preserved southern part of the island. The hike crosses the coastal rainforest and emerges onto paradisiacal beaches with turquoise waters and golden sand, framed by exuberant tropical plants. The paths lead to Malanza, which refers to the mangrove. From there, a small boat silently takes you to discover this fascinating ecosystem, so vital for biodiversity. You will then walk back to your accommodation, passing through the lively village of Porto Alegre, the “Joyful Port.”

Boat: 1 hour
Meals included: Breakfast & picnic & dinner

Day 7 - Relaxation, hiking or boat excursion to turtledove island

A well-deserved day of relaxation. Depending on the season, the beaches of the island are particularly famous for observing different species of turtles. You can also opt for a walk around your accommodation, between ylang-ylang forests and coves with turquoise waters. Another option is to take a boat (30 min return trip) to visit the nearby Turtledove Island, whose small summit is exactly on the line of the Equator. Afternoon transfer to the capital city.

Meals included: Breakfast
Night: São Tomé

Day 8 - Guided tour of São Tomé Cidade

São Tomé Cidade is the capital and only real city on the island and is worth a guided tour. Its luso-tropical architecture can be admired in the lively streets and on the "marginale", the large avenue lined with shade trees that runs along the bay. From the colorful market with stalls covered with tropical fruits and spices, you reach Fort São Sabastião, which houses a national museum dedicated to slavery. Your guide will also suggest an optional visit to a chocolate factory or the cultural centre where the best São Tomé artists are exhibited.
