Forcalquier: walking and cycling trips in Provence
Forcalquier: the authentic wild part of Provence
Forcalquier is a historic town built on a slope of a hill in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the heart of Provence between the Alps region and Aix en Provence.
Located at the foot of the Lure Mountains, on the Eastern part of the Luberon with a mild Mediterranean climate
A Romanesque and Medieval heritage
Forcalquier's history is very old. The town's golden age is the 12th century with many Romanesque edifices : the cathedral in the main square, the cordeliers convent.
Walking in the medieval citadel of Forcalquier is a great charm stroll. You will enjoy exploring the old city lined with 13th and 18th mansions houses and the cobbled streets
Across the lavender region
Forcalquier just a few km from the famous Valensole plateau, famous for its rolling lavender fields
The Monday Market, one of the most famous markets in Provence!
Don’t miss the Monday morning market !
Forcalquier is famous for its peaceful ambiance, its Monday morning market, with colourful stalls, olive oil, family-run goat farm that produces prized Banon goat’s cheese ..
You can also taste the « Baudouin » pastis - one of the symbol of Provence at the aperitif - that has its factory nearby.
It is also the home land of « L’Occitane » perfumes and natural cosmetics.
Forcalquier : ideal for a walking and cycling trip in Provence
Forcalquier is indeed in the heart of a genuine part of Provence : wild rolling countryside, in the heart of a rural Provence.
Walking trips
In the countryside around Forcalquier, you walk amid a garrigue vegetation of aromatic herbs and sparse oak and pine. The air is so pure and the skies so clear that a center for astronomy was built neraby in the 1930s.
You hike in a landscape of rolling hills, and in a Provence far from the beaten-track, with wafts of thyme and winter savory permeating the air.
Cycling trips
We particularly fancy this part of the Luberon for cycling tours on small country roads : a paradise for the cyclist that look for a rural authentic Provence.
