Azores walking holiday: Faial, São Jorge and Pico - guest reviews

" Everything was excellent- the taxi transfers worked extremely well, the walks were very different each day which was lovely. The Azores were not what we expected but in a good way, very unspoilt & like stepping back in time. Great food & people - wonderful! Climbing Pico with Pedro was epic! The whale & dolphin watching was truly memorable. Loved walking through the ancient vineyards !

" I was relieved the Pico mountain hike got cancelled due to bad weather as I think it would have been too much for me. Also I was glad that Antonio advised me to abandon the Ridge walk on Velas due to bad weather and he made an alternative suggestion and arrangements. Most of the walks were great and well planned. I particularly liked the Velas walk from the Ridge to the coast, and the Caldeira walk on Faial. It was not great planning to have a walk after the whale watching as I got very wet on the boat and wouldn’t have been able to do a long walk after.
Alma do Pico and Casa do Antonio were lovely places to stay with friendly staff, good breakfasts. Alma do Pico was especially nice accommodation.
The drivers - Jeffrey and Antonio on Faial and Velas were really helpful and flexible and able to suggest and help with alternatives if the weather made the plan difficult. Carlos was less helpful and flexible. It was a great holiday and apart from the weather at times causing problems with ferry times and high level walks, it was well planned and very enjoyable.
The trip highlights for me are : The Caldeira Walk, The Velas walk, and whale watching. Alma do Pico hotel, Jeffrey and Antonio for helpfulness and flexibility."

"Intura did a great job organizing the trip and the hikes. The hikes we did were remarkable and memorable. The drivers Intura hired were great. They were most willing to modify the printed itinerary based on our needs and desires. We do have one recommendation. Two of our hotels were well out of the towns on the islands. That meant we were pretty much stuck at that hotel restaurant for meals. The inn on São Jorge served good meals, the one on Pico were passable, but not really good. We might recommend that Intura provide a choice for clients to stay at a nicer or more convenient inn, at an additional price. Intura could also make a point of choosing a better inn. We realize that the choices are limited on these islands, but it might well be worth investigation. Rest assured that we did enjoy ourselves."

" The walks were amazing, our guides up Pico were excellent and took us up in a slow steady pace. If you had issues with vertigo they were really helpful and gave you confidence to do the last climb. All accommodation was excellent. The hotel on pico was a bit out of town but an easy enough walk! (And the views of faial island amazing) H18 had a great breakfast! Overall we had a great trip, the drivers were excellent and very friendly. 
Maybe a little more info on the climb up Pico- it was more difficult than anticipated and we might have bought better hiking boots if we knew the terrain was so rocky and uneven- still we had a great time and had no troubles on the walk at all
The highlights for us : Climbing Pico, pico vineyards and wine tasting, amazing seafood, great landscapes and flora. "

This walking holiday is a fantastic opportunity to explore the archipelago of the Azores. Island hopping between 3 very different islands, each with a very different theme : 

- For Faial, think seaside, sailors and swimming in natural pools

- For Sao Jorge, think wilderness, waterfalls and winding hiking trails

- For Pico, think volcanic rocks, valleys deep and vineyards

You can also tick two things off your bucket list thanks to this trip : walking on an active volcano and whale watching!
