It's the perfect place to enjoy a cup of freshly picked tea while admiring the original machines dating back to the 19th century. Then continue to the nearby village of Maia for a coastal walk along the beautiful beach of Praia da Viola with its black sand and cliffs full of streams and watermills. These lava stone mills, surrounded by yams, made it possible to transform wheat and corn into flour for making bread, once the basis of the island's diet.  Transfer to your accommodation.

Day 5 - Gourmet walk through the streets of Ponta Delgada - Flight to Santa Maria

foo tour ponta delgada

Transfer to Ponta Delgada where you are expected for a guided gourmet and cultural walk through the cobbled streets of the capital. At the time of the Great Discoveries, the Azores successfully served as an acclimatization zone between the Tropics and Europe for many exotic plant species (tea, coffee, tobacco, fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc.), brought back from Brazil, Africa and Asia by Portuguese navigators. The Azorean cuisine is therefore highly influenced by this produce which your guide (English-speaking) will have you discover through 6 tastings - from savory to sweet - and 2 traditional drinks.  Free afternoon to walk around the capital. A small city, its architectural style is marked by the use of basalt stones and its cobbled streets are reminiscent of the "Portuguese calçada" so representative of Lisbon. Enjoy a stroll through the historic centre and take a trip to the Graça market (closed on Sundays) to soak up the local ambiance.  At the end of the day, transfer to the airport to catch your flight to the neighboring island of Santa Maria. Transfer to your accommodation located in the city centre.

Meals included : breakfast
Night : Vila do Porto

Day 6 - Santa Maria : Santo Espirito and the Gonçalo Velho lighthouse

santa maria walking trip azoresTransfer to the eastern part of the island. In Maia, you have the possibility to swim before continuing to the Gonçalo Velho lighthouse.

Optional: possibility to transfer to Praia Formosa, the largest beach on the island for a well-deserved swim (weather conditions permitting). Round-trip transfer to be paid directly to your driver.

You enjoy a succession of ocean views, and the view of the bay of Sao Lourenço is stunning! An arched bay carpeted with terraced vines and bordered by a beautiful beach of fine and light sand. Continue to the old quarry of Poço da Pereira: a reddish basalt wall at the foot of which a small lake has formed. Continue with a magnificent descent into the Bay of Sao Lourenço to swim and enjoy this beautiful bay for the rest of the afternoon.

Descent through the endemic vegetation to the "red desert" of the Azores: the site of Barreiro da Faneca, which fascinates visitors with its undulating, arid and clayey landscape with reddish tones. Continue through the pastures to the sea and the small village of Anjos. It was in this Bay of Angels that Christopher Columbus dropped anchor on his way back from his discovery of the Americas.
