Cycling in Provence: discovering the town of Uzès

Cycling in Provence: discovering the town of Uzès

A self-guided Provence cycling tour from Provence to the Pont du Gard, via the small and picturesque town of Uzès

Uzes is located at the gates of both Provence (37 km from Avignon) and the Camargue (1 hour from Arles and the beaches) and is a medieval town in the Gard region.  The Romans first found water here and routed it to Nîmes via an aqueduct that included the impressive Pont du Gard.

Provence cycling trip: take the time to explore and experience your surroundings

On your Provence cycling tour through Uzès, you can admire the wonderful mix of medieval, Renaissance and classical architecture and heritage including the Duke’s castle, the Gothic chapel and its stained glass windows and climb the 100 steps up to the Bermonde Tower, an 11th century structure boasting breathtaking panoramic views over the historic centre from the summit.

Take the time to stroll through the medieval streets and alleyways steeped in history, across the elegant squares and past ancient monuments including the remarkable Fenestrelle Romanesque tower, the remains of the old cathedral which has the distinction of being the only example of a round bell tower in France!

Do not miss the following when in Uzès on your cycling holiday in Provence

The Place aux Herbes (the main square) and its beautiful arcaded buildings. It is the beating heart of the town, with many café and restaurant terraces offering refreshing drinks and delicious local cuisine. From as far back as the 13th century, the square hosts a bi-weekly Provençal market every Wednesday and Saturday with 60 and 200 colourful stalls respectively overflowing with fresh and local produce, a great place to pick up provisions for a day in the saddle.

We also recommend visiting the medieval garden at the foot of the King's Tower. A beautiful botanical garden home to over 400 species of ancient vegetables and medicinal plants.

If your cycling Provence holiday falls in the height of summer, you can enjoy the night markets that take place on the main square on Tuesdays from 5pm until 11pm throughout July and August. A wonderful and lively ambiance to experience during the warm summer evenings.
