Local delicacies in Corsica

Local delicacies in Corsica

Mouthwatering meats and tasty cheeses

Today, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about the delicious food in Corsica to help you plan the perfect picnic for your walking holiday in Corsica.  A friendly word of warning – do not read on an empty stomach!

When heading out for your hike, forget the usual rice or pasta salad for your picnic lunch. Instead, head out and buy a nice bit of bread and stop off in one of the many Corsican delicatessens and indulge yourself in some truly amazing Corsican meat and cheese!

It’s all about the cured meats on your Corsica hiking trip!

- The Prisuttu is a raw meat that is salted and left to dry. The meat comes from a local breed of pork that feast on acorns and chestnuts.

- The Lonzu has fewer calories and the preparation of this meat is one of the oldest traditions in Corsica. The Lonzu was hung up from the ceiling in the kitchen, close to the chimney. With the fires burning all year round, the meat gained a wonderfully smoked flavour.

- The Figatelli is a dry sausage made up of meat and pork fat. It can be eaten on its own, grilled on the barbeque or on pizzas.

No ordinary cheese sandwich on your walking trip in Corsica!

- A (large) slice of Bastilicacciu is just the ticket! Made from unpasteurized sheep’s milk it is only made by the sheep farmers themselves. A truly unique cheese to sample!

- The Calinzanincu is again made from unpasteurized sheep’s milk and often served with a delicious fig jam.

 - Corsica is also known for its famous Brocciu and the Corsicans use it in nearly every dish, sweet and savoury. It is a sort of cottage cheese, made with a mixture of sheep’s milk and full fat milk.

Enjoy some local sweet treats on your Corsica walk in stay!

Depending on the season, the Corsican clementine’s are sweet and juicy and flavour many deserts in the local restaurants and are great to have in your backpack on your hike as they will certainly help quench that thirst! We also recommend filling your backpack with Corsican biscuits. Made from chestnut flour and flavoured with lemons, aniseed or almonds, they are a great dry snack to enjoy on your Corsica walking trail.

At the end of the day, you can relax and enjoy the local beer, the Pietra, made from chestnuts or indulge in a glass of Corsican Muscat wine. Cheers!
