About the Authentic Madeira trip

This trip will take you on an adventure, taking on the rugged terrain and central ridges dominating the primeval forest in the heart of the National Park. You will also discover an island of exceptional floral beauty and rural villages where everyday life is in full swing.  Madeira offers a multitude of sensations and experiences, each as fulfilling as the next! 

We've designed a trip for nature lovers and sports enthousiasts that will take you from one extreme to the next in just a few hours. In the same day, you'll go from conquering the grandiose mountains to basking in the sun along the subtropical ocean coast!  This is a well-balanced tour for those seeking a more basic and down-to earth journey. You are self-sufficient at times, carrying your belongings in your backpack from one accommodation to the next, following the hiking trails and mesmerizing landscapes of Madeira.

Authentic Madeira : Day by day 

Day 1 - Welcome to Madeira

  • From Funchal airport, you take the local bus to Machico, the fishing port with its pretty shady square and pebble beach on the seafront.
  • Night in Machico

Day 2 - São Lourenço peninsula

  • Walk - Baia d'Abra > São Lourenço peninsula > Baia d'Abra
    3 hours  /  7 km - 4,3 miles round trip / Ascent: +400m - Descent: -400m
  • Take the local bus (payment on the spot) to the tip of São Lourenço (around 15 minutes). The tip of São Lourenço is located at the eastern end of the island and offers landscapes of moorland and cliffs with remarkable shapes and colours. You can enjoy a swim on a small sandy beach during your hike. Return to Machico by local bus (payment on the spot).

Day 3 - Coastal hike to Porto da Cruz

  • Walk - Machico > Boca do Risco > Porto da Cruz
    4 hours  /  13 km - 8 miles / Ascent: +150 - Descent: -350m
  • With your luggage on your back, depart on foot from Machico for one of Madeira's most beautiful stages on a hiking path 300m above the ocean. After the terraced fields of the Ribeira Seca valley, the coastal path to Boca do Risco offers plunging views of the surf and coves and ends with a long descent to the sea and the fishing village of Porto da Cruz. Possibility of swimming in the natural pools of Porto da Cruz (entrance fee). At the end of the hike, we organise a taxi transfer to Santana with its colourful fairytale thatched cottages. Settle in for 2 nights in a friendly hotel.

Day 4 - São Jorge to Santana

  • Walk - São Jorge > Santana
    4 hours 45 / 10 km - 6,2 miles / Ascent: 650m - Descent: -680m
  • Take the local bus to São Jorge (to be paid for on the spot - approx. 1 hour). This itinerant hike offers a superb descent towards the sea, with terraced fields and a path on the heights, all the way to São Jorge. Descent into the valley. Possibility of a swim in the pools before heading back up to Santana. You arrive at Quinta do Furao, where you can sample Madeira wine (with supplement). Walk back to your accommodation.

Day 5 - Great crossing

  • Walk - Achada do Texeira  > Pico Ruivo > Encumeada
    6 hours  /  14 km - 8,6 miles  / Ascent: +550 - Descent: -1240m
  • Transfer by taxi to the top of the island. With your luggage on your back, you begin a long east-west crossing over the ridges with grandiose views of Madeira and the ocean as far as the Encumeada pass. Dinner and overnight in Encumeada.

Day 6 - On the heights of the Paul da Serra plateau

  • Walk - Lombo do Mourro > Plateau > Encumeada
    6 hours 30  /  17 km - 10,5 miles  / Ascent: +650 - Descent: -650m
  • From your hotel, you leave for a beautiful loop hike on the Paul plateau. After following a first levada on the south coast, you will pass by the central ridge to arrive on the levada do Pináculo which runs along the north face of the Paul da Serra plateau. Primary forest, numerous waterfalls, spectacular views of São Vicente and the great peaks paint the landscape  before the path enters a magnificent forest of tree heather to find the levada do Norte which winds its way back to the south face and your accommodation (passage through 2 tunnels).

Day 7 - On the road to Funchal

  • For this last day on Madeira Island, you will be transferred to the beautiful city of Funchal. Once in the city, you have several options:

. Take the cable car that connects the city centre to the sumptuous tropical gardens in less than 20 minutes.
. Visit the tropical gardens which have beautiful plants from all over the world and native plants from the Madeira forest. Here you can admire oriental gardens as well as a beautiful collection of azulejos (15th-20th centuries).
. There are two ways to get back down to the city centre, either on foot through the picturesque streets or by taking the wicker basket downhill, a traditional means of transport once used by the locals to navigate down through the narrow and steep streets of the island.
. A gourmet stroll through the historic centre of Funchal that combines a gastronomic and cultural discovery. No less 15 tastings to sample the savoury delights such as the hot pork and garlic sandwich, sword fish, grilled tuna and also sweet ftreats such as ginger biscuits, honey cake and not forgetting the famous Madeira rum based cocktail Poncha. (Visit and tasting possible on Tuesday and Friday afternoon or Wednesday morning)

Day 8 - End of your trip

  • Reach the airport by the local bus. We recommend to take the bus 3 hours before the departure of your flight.
