Madeira walking: from Picos to Levadas trails - guest reviews

Nicholas & Christine - Sept 2024

" We like walking in solitude. Ironically, our favourite walks from the holiday were the four
substitutions made because of the wildfires and land slips. It must have been challenging for you to alter many
of the arrangements at the last minute because of wild-fires, land slips and overbookings.
The Road Book (with updates) was of good quality, very well written and informative, providing
useful corroboration to the routes in our GPS device. Thank you !"

"We chose Intura for our Madeira walking holiday because we thought they had the best programme covering much of the island, and their package represented good value for money. Eight weeks before departure, we received a detailed, informative and well written “Road Book” describing our walks, accommodation and transfer arrangements. This was accompanied by GPX files of all the walks for use with our GPS device. A few weeks before our departure wildfires swept through many of the areas where we would be walking and the impact of this was unclear. Intura designed an alternative programme for us at no cost, avoiding the closed-off fire damaged areas and provided new documentation to the same high standard. In the event, all the arrangements worked flawlessly. With us being English based in UK and Intura being a French company based in France, we wondered if this would introduce any difficulties, but we never experienced any."

David & Taylor - July 2022

"Great trip, really useful book and maps. For us the Encumeada pass walk was easier than the pico ruivo to pico do Ariero walk even though it is longer. The Pico Ruivo walk has much more narrow up and down sections with many large groups to pass on very narrow paths. Both enjoyable but I would say the shorter walk is more challenging.
The highlights for us : Stunning scenery on each walk with each walk being different. The leaves walk through the tunnels stood out.
Hotel Linda was in a beautiful spot and had the best breakfast and dinner options. Would highly recommend it !!"

The destination expert

This walking trip in Madeira is a bit like walking through an enchanted forest! You walk through the Primary Forest with its thick vegetation, endemic wildlife and native bird song, past kilometres and kilometres of mesmorizing terraced crops, following levadas, through tunnels and up to the summit of the Pico Ruivo.  Phew! The landscape changes from lush green to an arid and jagged coastline, remote, rustic and quite simply breath taking. You end the trip in Funchal, a lively little city and a gentle 'bring you back down to earth' thud!
