Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Mindelo on Sao Vicente Island !

mindelo, cape verde cesaria evora home townYour self-guided walking trip in Cape Verde begins on the island of São Vicente at Cesaria Evora airport. The name of the airport sets the tone of the trip: you have just landed in the living home of Cape Verdean music, in the homeland of the "barefoot diva" who has spread the music and culture of "this little country" around the world. Private transfer to Mindelo centre. Depending on the time of your arrival, enjoy a first walk - alone or accompanied by a guide - through the streets lined with old houses that forge the soul of the city.

Add a night in Mindelo to discover the entire island of Sao Vicente.

In the morning enjoy a guided tour to discover the history of Mindelo including visits to the fruit and vegetable markets, the fish market, and the African market as well as a workshop of a luthier who makes all kinds of guitars and stringed instruments, including the very local cavaquinho, a small 4-stringed guitar, ancestor of the ukulele.

In the afternoon discover the island of Sao Vicente with a private driver, explore Monte Verde which culminates at 750m for beautiful panoramic pictures, Salamansa a colorful village with a long beach (kitesurfing area), the beach of Baia das Gatas known for its music festival in August, Praia Grande with its beautiful white sand dunes

Day 2 - Santo Antao: Cova Crater and Paul Valley

You have to get up early this morning to take the ferry that connects Sao Vicente to Santo Antao (1 hour crossing). When you arrive in Porto Novo, the taxi is waiting for you for your transfer to the central ridges. Discover the Cova crater lined with pine and mimosa trees and enjoy a spectacular descent along a winding path through the northern valleys to Chã de Manuel dos Santos. Arrive on foot at your accommodation.

Day 3 - From the top of the Paul Valley to the Passagem Gardens

A gentle discovery of the upper part of the Paul Valley, exploring the terraced crops and the tropical plantations of yams, sugar cane and banana trees. On the way, beautiful traditional houses will also give you an insight into the mountain architecture. You will pass by the famous Bar O Curral where we advise you to taste local specialties such as fresh goat's cheese with herbs (to be paid locally). Continue to the ancient Portuguese gardens of Passagem. Transfer back to the hotel.

Day 4 - Coastal path from Fontainhas to Formiguinhas

This morning, you leave the lush Paul Valley to reach the fishing village of Ponta do Sol. The taxi drops you off at the pretty, colourful hilltop village of Fontainhas which marks the beginning of your day's walk. A wonderful, paved path on the heights leads to the hamlets of Corvo and Formiguinhas. This famous structure runs along the coast for several kilometres, clinging to the cliff, offering a unique panorama of the ocean and the north coast. After your lunch at Isabel’s, facing the ocean, you retrace your steps to Fontainhas where the taxi is waiting for you.

Day 5 - Central Valleys and Cachupa cooking class

Short transfer to the village of Coculi. You will go up the small bucolic and agricultural valley of Joao Afonso where your host Augusta awaits you for a cooking class based on the traditional dish: Cachupa. After the preparation, it's time for the tasting! Continue your hike through the nearby Cha de Pedras Valley. Transfer at the end of the hike in the south of the island to the village of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo. The drive is magnificent and crosses arid, ochre-colored desert landscapes. Settle in for 2 nights in this haven of peace.

Day 6 - Free day in Tarrafal

cape verde walking guideDiscover this peaceful fishing village on foot, where the day is marked by the comings and goings of the colorful boats. Take time to relax, to take a stroll on the black sand beach, go snorkelling or scuba diving, or embark on a fishing adventure aboard a traditional boat. If you're feeling up to it, you can enjoy an optional coastal walk to the peaceful village of Monte Trigo, with a scenic return to Tarrafal in a fisherman's boat - a great opportunity to discover the island from a different perspective.

Day 7 - Return to Mindelo

Last free morning in Tarrafal. Transfer in the early afternoon to Porto Novo to take the ferry back to Mindelo. Last evening in Mindelo to enjoy the island's relaxed lifestyle and Creole hospitality.

Day 8 - End of your walking tour in Cape Verde!
