WEATHER
The climate is characterized by exceptional sunshine and dry summers: in all seasons, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential! The French Riviera has a microclimate due to its proximity to the sea and the mountains. Thus, it is an ideal hiking region that can be discovered in all seasons. In the hinterland and the Mercantour, the climate is a little less temperate but just as sunny.
- Spring : In the hinterland and in the Mercantour mountains, the paths may still be snow
-covered until Easter. On the coast, it is a festival of colors and scents: a real paradise for hikers!
- Summer : The region has an exceptional microclimate. With a sea breeze on the coast, and a cooler temperature in altitude.
- Autumn : A very pleasant season with a mild climate and beautiful sunny days. The sea is still warm. In the back country, you find the the deep Autumn colours
- Winter : It contrasts by the mildness of its temperatures. A different atmosphere with a climate always very mild. The mountain hinterland is under the snow.

FAQ
Will there be snow on my self-guided walking trip?
We do not sell this trip during winter, but depending on the time of year (early spring), you may see snow on the mountains, but the hiking trails and villages will be free of snow.
What should I pack for walking in the French Riviera?
Always pack layers as the weather can change from alpine to coastal in one day. In spring and autumn, you will need thin layers that are easy to take on and off to help regulate your body temperature with the outside one. In summer, it can get very hot, even in the back country, so shorts and tshirt for the daytime, but a thin fleece for the cooler evenings. Remember to pack & wear sunscreen in all seasons.
Do people speak Italian in the French Riviera?
Our hiking trails pass very close to the Italian border, you can even hop over the border for lunch on Day 2. Whilst many locals speak the language, the offical language in the French Riviera is French.
What is Menton famous for?
Menton is famous for the lemon festival held every year in February. Giant citrus statues adorn the square and colouful citrus floats parade through the streets.
What is Limoncello?
It is a cloudy, pale yellow Italian lemon liqueur. The lemon zest is steeped in alcohol and then sweetend with maple syrup.
