During this Provence walking and cycling trip, you will follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps from St remy into the Alpilles landscapes of olive groves to the spectacular perched village of Les Baux, through plains dotted with cypress and old stone farmhouses . You will enjoy the charming artist village of St Remy, and ends in the  beautiful roman city of Arles.

Day 1 - St Remy de Provence

  • Arrival on your own in St Remy de Provence. Explore the artsy Saint-Rémy de Provence and its environs, the museum of Van Gogh’s paintbrush. Head into the sunlit hills to discover the remains of the Roman town of Glanum.

    . Have an extra night in Avignon and take the time to discover this beautiful medieval town, with the famous Pope's palace !

Day 2 - Cycling at the foot of the Alpilles

    29km / 18 miles - Ascent: +50 m / Descent: -50 m
  • Your cycling trip starts by following the base of the Alpilles mountains to the east, first on small roads and then on a track leading into the vines. You reach the picture-perfect Provençal village of Eygalières, off the beaten tourist path, whose main square offers a few restaurants and cafés for a midday break. Heading northbound on tiny roads you reach the sleepy village of Mollégès before returning to St. Rémy through the heart of the countryside.

Day 3 - Towards the perched Chateau of les Baux de Provence

    42km / 27 miles - Ascent: +400 m / Descent: -400 m
  • It is no wonder why Van Gogh chose Saint Rémy as a second home, a town bathed in light and colour. Leaving St Remy, you can visit Saint Paul de Mausole, the former monastery where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life, and did some of his best work. Just beside the monastery is Glanum, a Roman archaeological site, its massive limestone ruins a testament to over 2000 years of history. Biking along the winding streets of the the Alpilles mountains, in landscapes of pine trees and wildflowers, you reach Les Baux de Provence, a town perched vertiginously atop a rocky crag, crowned by the ruins of its feudal castle. Les Baux is listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Ride back to St Remy.

Day 4 - St Remy and the crests of the Alpilles mountains

    3 hours - 10km / 6,2 miles - Ascent: +300 m / Descent: -300 m
    Longer walk option : 6 hours  - 18km/11.2 miles - +550m/-550m)
  • You start your first walk from the picturesque Saint Rémy into the Alpilles hills, then along the fabulously panoramic ridge-line. Along the way, take the time to visit the Saint-Paul de Mausole monastery, where Van Gogh spent over a year, creating over 150 paintings and some of his best work.

Day 5 - On the way to the Luberon villages and lavender fields

    Enjoy a free day in the beautiful city of Arles, the "Rome" of Provence with its lively streets  and remarkable wealth of Roman monuments, including its majestic coliseum. This small city emits a warm and authentic charm.

Day 6 - Bye Bye Provence
