WEATHER
Provence is famous for its 360 days of sunshine per year ! The Provençal climate is characterized by the bright and ever-present sun, and dry summers. The winds and rains are sporadic.
- Winter is most often mild and sunny, with incredibly clear skies.
- Autumn & Spring, with their summer-like days, can sometimes bring more abundant rains. A great hiking and cycling season !
- May and June, when almond trees and lavender fields are in bloom, are the most pleasant months, followed by September and October.
- Summer is very hot and dry. Walking is great in the interior of Provence, above 1000m in altitude to avoid the heat, like the Cevennes, the back country of Nice, Mercantour nature park… Cycle through all of Provence in the mornings and late afternoons. - A Word about “Le Mistral” in Provence The strong north-western winds blow down the Rhône Valley, picking up speed as they head through Provence towards the Med, helping to keep the region very sunny. The Mistral generally blows in the winter and spring and considerably less during the warmer months.

FAQ
Why are the Marseille Calanques a must-see and unique natural spot ?
The Calanques of Marseille are a must-see and truly unique because they combine wild natural beauty with easy access from a major city. These dramatic limestone inlets stretch along the Mediterranean between Marseille and Cassis, offering stunning contrasts of sheer white cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and fragrant pine-covered hills. It's one of the few places in Europe where you can hike, swim, kayak, or climb in such a pristine, rugged environment so close to an urban centre.
Designated as a national park, the Calanques are also ecologically significant, home to rare plants, birds, and marine life.
Why is the Sainte Victoire mountain so famous ?
The Sainte-Victoire is one of the most iconic and revered landmarks in Provence. Rising to 1,011 metres, the mountain dominates the landscape east of Aix-en-Provence. Its stark white limestone cliffs glow in the sun and change color throughout the day, creating a striking visual presence that has inspired awe for centuries.
What makes Sainte-Victoire particularly famous is its connection to the painter Paul Cézanne, who painted the mountain over 80 times. His depictions helped define modern art and brought international attention to this otherwise quiet corner of southern France. The mountain has since become a symbol of Provence's artistic and natural heritage.
What are the ground transportation options included in the walking trip in France?
All transfers are included from one hotel to the next, to the start of the walk, and from Cassis to Aix en Provence. On 2 walks to La Ciotat & Vauvenargues, the return transfer is not included. It is to be paid locally
How do I get transportation from Aix en Provence ?
From Aix en Provence, you have regular local trains for Marseille. If you want to get a train to Paris, there are busses from Aix centre to Aix TGV station ( 30/40mn ride)
Not talking French on my walking holiday, is it a problem ?
English is not commonly spoken in small villages, but more so in the larger cities. With a few basic French phrases and some effort with pronunciation, you’ll manage just fine. Naturally, the more French you speak, the more enriching your experience in France will be.
