Hiking in the famous Calanques of Cassis in Provence - all year round - guest reviews

Mark & Lucy - May 2025

The walks were great - very scenic and a lovely way to get an impression of the landscape of that area. We were fine with the steep bits but thought that anyone who was not particularly fit would probably struggle with the very steep uphill section of walk 1 (the rocky climb after En Vau towards Port Pin) and some sections of walk 2 including the initial steep uphill road, and bits where the paths involved some scrambling up steep rocky sections). We were definitely pleased to be doing the walks in May - the summer would be too hot for us!
Arriving in beautiful Calanque En Vau with hardly anyone else around (mid-morning) and swimming there. Seeing rare birds and butterflies, and hearing nightingales singing as we walked up the road towards Cap Canaille past vineyards. The stunning views from the cliffs along Cap Canaille. The walk around Ile Pomegues (which we actually did while we were staying in Marseille before coming to Cassis) - the whole island was full of nesting gulls with chicks, and the sea was lovely. Strolling a few yards to the beach in Cassis for a quiet swim before breakfast.
We would definitely consider travelling again with Intura and will recommend to friends. The communication prior to the trip was very prompt, courteous and helpful and all the arrangements went smoothly."

The destination expert

This walking trip is a real melting pot of landscapes. You get to visit 2 great cities – Marseille with its port and infamous early morning fish market and  Aix en Provence - with an extension option -  wonderfully bourgeois with its impressive banks, shops and mansions. And then there’s Cassis and La Ciotat, 2 picture postcard towns where you will be spoilt for choice for restaurants and cafés. Throw in a little bit of island hopping and swimming on the Friouls Islands, add some walks through the calanques and then finish with the steep and steady climb up to Cézanne’s Sainte Victoire (not for the faint hearted!). It does all fit into a 5-day holiday, we promise!
