MOBILE PHONE & INTERNET
Please check that your mobile/cell plan allows for calls and messages abroad. A good option is to buy a "country SIM card" in a phone shop/newsagent. It will cost you around 10-15€ and will allow you to call local phone numbers with internet access.
MONEY MATTERS & CLOSING HOURS
The currency is the €uro. Please ensure to have some cash with you as there aren't always ATM machines in small villages. Tips are always included (different than Canada and USA) but always appreciated. Most shops are closed on Sundays. Most supermarkets are usually open on Sundays until midday.
FAQ
How fit do I need to be for a self-guided walking trip in Madeira?
This walking tour is graded moderate. There are alternate walking choices everyday. Please check your route notes for this information. It’s important to do some practice walks with both ascents and descents in the weeks leading up to your trip. This will help you enjoy the tour to the fullest and feel more at ease on the trails.
What not to miss during my self-guided walking in Madeira?
The freedom of a hire car allows you to access Madeira's main attractions in addition to superb hiking trails: the natural volcanic pools of Porto Moniz, the glass platform at Cabo Girao perched at 800 m, take the cable car up to Monte Park to visit the Tropical Garden, relax on the beautiful black sand beach of Seixal, visit the traditional little houses of Santana.
Is it easy to drive in Madeira?
In Madeira, you drive on the right-hand side of the road. Madeira's roads can be narrow and winding, especially in rural areas. To explore mountainous terrain, a car with a bit more power and stability might be necessary. That is why we have included category C in this trip from 2 people. You need to know how to drive a manual car. Automatic car rental is also possible (please contact us).
How far in advance do I need to book?
We recommend booking as soon as your travel plans are confirmed as this area is highly sought after. During peak periods, such as the Flower Festival in May, it may occasionally be necessary to arrange alternative hotels or guesthouses, which will always be of an equal or higher standard than those featured. We’ll do our best to accommodate your preferences.
What should I wear and pack for my self-guided walking in Madeira ?
Comfortable walking shoes for hikes and exploring cobblestone streets. Light layers: The weather can vary depending on altitude and time of year. Rain jacket or windbreaker: Madeira has unpredictable weather, especially in the mountains. We highly recommend a head torch for the tunnel sections.
