Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Mindelo on São Vicente Island !

mindelo, cape verde cesaria evora home townYour self-guided walking trip in Cape Verde begins on the island of São Vicente at Cesaria Evora airport. The name of the airport sets the tone of the trip: you have just landed in the living home of Cape Verdean music, in the homeland of the "barefoot diva" who has spread the music and culture of "this little country" around the world.  Private transfer to Mindelo centre. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy a first walk - alone or accompanied by a guide - along its streets lined with old houses that forge the soul of the city. Founded by the Portuguese and developed by the English, the traces of this colonial presence are omnipresent. Once the visit is over, enjoy a moment of relaxation on the beautiful Laginha beach from which you can see the imposing Santo Antão and have a swim. For your first evening, immerse yourself in the Cape Verdean atmosphere in the numerous bars/restaurants of the city (important: live music is played on weekends).

Meals included : breakfast
Night : Mindelo

We recommend :
Add a night in Mindelo to discover the entire island of São Vicente.
. In the morning enjoy a guided tour to discover the history of Mindelo including visits to the fruit and vegetable markets, the fish market, and the African market as well as a workshop of a luthier who makes all kinds of guitars and stringed instruments, including the very local cavaquinho, a small 4-stringed guitar, ancestor of the ukulele.
. In the afternoon discover the island of São Vicente with a private driver, explore Monte Verde which culminates at 750m for beautiful panoramic pictures, Salamansa a colorful village with a long beach (kitesurfing area), the beach of Baia das Gatas known for its music festival in August, Praia Grande with its beautiful white sand dunes.

Day 2 - Santo Antão: Vila das Pombas and the Paul Valley

Paul Valley santo Antao great crossing

Transfer to the port of Mindelo. Board the ferry for the famous crossing between Porto Grande, the main port on the island of São Vicente, and Porto Novo, on the island of Santo Antão. You will be swept up in the hustle and bustle of the locals when you embark and disembark! Transfer to Vila das Pombas, a peaceful, flower-filled seaside village that also marks the entrance to the prosperous and lush Paul Valley, which you will discover on foot. After a short transfer, you'll discover this valley, where water flows continuously - a rare occurrence in Cape Verde - enabling a wide range of crops to thrive including manioc, sweet potatoes, bananas and sugar cane. Reputed to be one of the best in the country, Santo Antão's grog is partly made in this valley, and along the way you'll come across a number of traditional factories, the trapiches (in operation from January to June), where you can enjoy a refreshing drink. Taxi transfer to Vila das Pombas.

From the pass, the view takes in the whole of the Paul valley and the floor of the Cova crater, carpeted with a mosaic of crops. The trail from the crater to the Ribeira da Torre is breathtaking: first you pass through humid forests of eucalyptus and mimosa, then you reach ridge paths offering grandiose panoramas of sharp peaks and rocky promontories. The gradient is dizzying, before easing off to return to the terraced farmland as far as Xoxo, where you will find your guest house.
