Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Paimpol

best walking holiday in france europe with wild nature and good foodArrive in Paimpol by train from either Guingamp or Saint Brieuc. Paimpol is an authentic Breton harbor with granite houses and colorful shutters, where the scent of seaweed and the history of fishermen fill the air. Its cobblestone streets, church, and lively docks make it a preserved village, blending old-world charm and art de vivre. The atmosphere is warm, lulled by the cries of seagulls and tales of the sea.

Day 2 - Walking to Beauport Abbey

walking holiday in brittany france europe

A gentle walk for your first hiking day: you leave Paimpol on foot and follow a well-marked panoramic path above the coast. You will no doubt cross paths with many locals out for their daily stroll. Your goal today is the beautiful 13th century Beauport Abbey where you can explore the grounds and admire the view across the bay. You can choose to keep the walk short and sweet with a bus back to Paimpol, or add some more distance with a 45 mins out and back walk to an oyster farm & bar, where you can sit and enjoy the view over the bay, whilst sampling some seafood tapas with a glass of white wine (table at the oyster bar to be booked in advance. Closed on Saturdays). Walk back to Paimpol.
Walk : Paimpol > Beauport Abbey > Paimpol | 3h40 |  12 km - 7.5 miles | Elevation: +80m/-80m
. Extra out and back to the oyster bar & farm : add 45 mins

Today, you can chose to explore the lanes and alleyways of Bréhat on foot or by bike. Vehicules are restricted on the island. You catch the local bus from Paimpol to Arcouest Point ferry pier (15 mins -  ticket not included - extra transfer with supplement on Sunday),  then take a boat to Bréhat Island (10 mins - ticket not included).
There are 3 bike hire shops on the island, hybrid & ebikes available. Bréhat boasts an exceptional climate that allows for abundant and astonishing exotic vegetation to thrive. It is called "the Island of flowers" because it is home to many varieties of flowers, including the Agapanthus, a bluish-purple flower that is a symbol of the island, and hydrangeas. Loose yourself in the labyrinth of pretty streets and alleys and admire the beautiful houses and gardens along the way. A truly wonderful day! Boat back to Arcouest Point and then local bus back to Paimpol (tickets not included).
Walk : Bréhat island loop walk | 4h |  13 km - 8 miles | Elevation: +130m/-130m
Ride : Bréhat island loop ride | 12 km - 7.4 miles | Elevation: +80m/-80m

Night : Paimpol

Extension idea : stay the night on Bréhat island
Book an extra night and stay on Bréhat Island (on day 3) and enjoy the peace and quiet. Once the last ferry departs Bréhat for the mainland, it’s just the tourists staying in the hotels and guest houses, and a few locals. Stroll through the quiet streets, pack a picnic and head to the beach for an incredible sunset, or enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants on the island. It’s a different ambiance, more relaxed and tranquil. After breakfast the following day, you catch the 1st ferry back to the mainland & bus to Paimpol train station.
