WEATHER
Continental Portugal has a climate with Atlantic and Mediterranean influences.
The coast is always more temperate, subjected to the oceanic mildness while the climate becomes drier when you go inland. The North of Portugal is much more rainy and cold in winter while the Algarve in the south enjoys a very mild microclimate. The summer is hot in Portugal, so we advice to stay on the coast during this period.
- Spring : all regions are pleasant at this period, with the explosion of flowering and an extraordinary light.
- Summer : Warm and dry inland, we recommend the tours on the coastline, more temperate and ideal for wonderful swimming.
- Autumn : The beginning of autumn is very pleasant from North to South. After the rains at the end of October and beginning of November, the southern part (from Lisbon to the Algarve) benefits from the "little summer of Saint Martin" also called the 2nd spring. It is a very beautiful period, with great light and the first oranges.
- Winter : The Algarve benefits from an exceptional micro-climate. The almond trees in bloom from January give a particularly pleasant touch to the region. From December to early March it benefits from exceptional light.

FAQ
What is the Fishermen’s Trail in Portugal?
The Fishermen’s Trail, or Trilho dos Pescadores, is the most famous coastal section of the Rota Vicentina, a network of hiking trails located on the south-west coast of Portugal, spanning the regions of Alentejo and the Algarve. This trail follows ancient paths once used by fishermen to reach the cliffs and fishing grounds along the Atlantic Ocean.
When is the best time to go hiking on the Fishermen’s Trail?
You can hike the Fishermen’s Trail all year round, but spring and autumn are often considered the best seasons. The temperatures are pleasant and the scenery is particularly beautiful, especially in spring when wildflowers carpet the cliffs and coastal meadows.
What wildlife can be seen along the Fishermen’s Trail?
You can spot a wide variety of seabirds, as well as numerous birds of prey, particularly during the migration seasons. It is the only place in the world where storks nest by the sea. With a bit of luck, you might spot an otter, a fox or an Egyptian mongoose. The Vicentine Coast is home to over 1,000 plant species, including 45 endemic species...
Why is the Fishermen’s Trail considered one of the most beautiful coastal trails in Europe?
The Fishermen’s Trail winds its way along a wild and unspoilt coastline, protected by a 90,000-hectare nature reserve, covering a distance of 110 kilometres. The trail runs alongside the Atlantic Ocean, offering a full spectrum of coastal landscapes, small market towns and whitewashed villages.
Is it possible to do the Fishermen’s Trail as a solo traveller?
Yes, the Fishermen’s Trail is perfectly suitable for solo travellers. The route is well signposted, featuring the official Rota Vicentina signage, which makes it easy to find your way along the route and allows you to walk entirely on your own.
