When is the best time to travel to the Algarve? Month by month guide

Choosing the best time to visit the Algarve depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. From endless cliffs stretching along the coastline and golden beaches to charming villages and scenic outdoor activities, the region reveals different sides throughout the year. This guide explores the Algarve month by month, helping you understand its seasonal rhythms, from lively summer days to quieter nature-filled escapes, so you can plan your trip at the perfect time.

Spring in the Algarve : cool weather and vibrant atmosphere

March

As the winter fades, March is the season of quiet transformation. The beginning of spring offers mild temperatures, averaging 18°C (63°F), with crisp mornings and cooler evenings around 10°C (50°F). The Algarve landscape turns into a lush green paradise filled with blooming almond trees. March is an ideal time to visit the Algarve for nature lovers, walkers and photographers who want to enjoy the scenery with fewer crowds. Coastal trails become particularly beautiful at this time of year, making it perfect for scenic hikes and outdoor exploration. In March it’s best to go for a walking trip along the south coast of the Algarve, from Faro to Sagres, and visit typical Portuguese white villages like Burgau. Local events at this time of year include small food festivals and traditional markets celebrating regional products. Yet another reason to embrace the Algarve in March is the excellent value it offers. Because it is still the low season, flights and accommodation are significantly cheaper than during summer, making it a great time to plan Algarve holidays on a budget.

April

As spring settles in, April brings the Algarve to life with a gentle rise in temperatures. Expect pleasant weather averaging around 20°C (68°F), with sunny afternoons and mild evenings near 12°C (54°F). April is a perfect time to experience the Algarve at a laid-back pace. It’s particularly well suited for a multi-activity holiday, as spring in southern Portugal offers wonderful conditions to combine cycling and hiking while enjoying the surrounding nature in its calmest state. The ocean remains fresh, but warmer days invite the more adventurous to take a first dip. Along the iconic cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, a stop at Praia do Camilo is almost a must for those tempted to swim. Another advantage of visiting in April is the balance it offers between good weather and reasonable prices. While the season is slowly picking up, accommodation and flights are still more affordable than in peak summer months.

May

May is often considered one of the best periods to visit the Algarve. Just before the peak season begins, the region enjoys long sunny days and pleasantly warm temperatures. During the day, temperatures average 23–26°C (73-79°F), with cooler evenings around 15–17°C (59-67°F) and very little rain. It’s perfect for travelers looking to enjoy spring in the Algarve, combining coastal hiking with visits to traditional villages and local markets, like the famous Olhão market, where stalls are filled with oranges, almonds, local fresh fish and seafood. May is the ideal time to visit the Rio Formosa National Park, as the heat remains comfortable for walking or cycling. On top of that, during the spring in the Algarve, the wildlife is particularly active, making it a great time for birdwatching. From a budget perspective, May remains attractive. Accommodation is widely available, tourist services are fully operating, and flights remain reasonably priced compared to the peak season.

Early June

Early June in the Algarve offers almost summer-like conditions while still avoiding the busiest weeks of the year. Temperatures rise to around 24–26°C (75-79°F), making it perfect to spend more time by the sea. This period is ideal for travelers who want to visit the south of Portugal, combining outdoor adventures with relaxing time by the ocean. Coastal trails remain pleasant to explore and the beaches are still relatively quiet. Prices begin to rise slightly, but remain more affordable than in July and August.

Summer in the Algarve : ideal to discover the golden coast

June

June has all the benefits of the summer in the Algarve without the crowds. It’s the ideal month for travelers seeking warm, sunny days in a still relaxed environment. Average temperatures range from 26–28°C (79-82°F), with mild evenings around 18°C (64°F). Visiting the Algarve in June means long beach days and spectacular coastal views. The sea becomes warmer, making it excellent to cool off after a hike along the cliffs.  In June the recommended walking Algarve itinerary starts by the Barlavento coast, then follows the Vicentine coast, with a stop at Ponta da Piedade, famous for its cliffs, its breathtaking viewpoints and its hidden coves perfect for a swim. For culture enthusiasts, June also brings the famous MED Festival in Loulé, a vibrant mix of music, art exhibitions, dance performances, and street theatre.

July

July marks the heart of the summer in the Algarve. The weather is reliably sunny, with temperatures averaging 28–35°C (82-95°F) and long daylight hours. This is the ideal time to plan a trip to the south of Portugal, focused on exploring the coastline via cliffside trails, stopping from beach to beach, perhaps even spotting a few dolphins and enjoying the vibrant seaside atmosphere. A great way to explore Algarve in July is by e-bike, cycling alongside the coast and some of its most beautiful natural sites, such as Ria Formosa Natural Park. On the way, emblematic villages like Carrapateira, a fishing village popular with surfers, as well as Sagres and its fortress, can be visited. Travelers can also experience some of the main events in the Algarve, like Feira da Serra de São Brás de Alportel, a socio-cultural event dedicated to local producers and products. Because July is part of the peak season in Algarve, accommodation prices and flight costs increase significantly.

August

August is the peak season in the Algarve. Expect hot temperatures between 28 and 35°C (82-95°F), buzzing beach towns and a festive atmosphere across the region. This is the best period to visit Algarve for travelers who want to experience the lively summer energy of Portugal’s southern coast, with numerous cultural & gastronomic events like the unmissable Portimão’s Sardine Festival! With the days still long, August is a great time to visit Cape Saint Vicent, the westernmost point of Europe, to watch the sunset. However, August also means crowded beaches and higher accommodation prices. If you plan to visit during this period, it is strongly recommended to book flights and hotels well in advance.

Early september

Early September, the climate in Algarve is ideal : the weather still feels like summer,  days are still warm and sunny, with temperatures between 26 and 29°C (79-84°F) but many tourists begin to leave as the peak season ends. Early September is recommended for travelers interested in the summer in the Algarve but want to avoid crowds and higher rates of the peak season. Flights and accommodation become noticeably cheaper than in August, making it an excellent time to plan Algarve holidays with better value.

Autumn in the Algarve : peace and breath-taking nature

Late Septembre

Late September marks the transition between summer in the Algarve and autumn in the Algarve. Days remain warm and sunny, and the sea is still pleasant for swimming. This is an ideal time to enjoy coastal walks and quieter beaches while benefiting from excellent weather conditions. Autumn is also harvest season, and travelers may discover local produce such as pomegranates, almonds and tropical fruits. Because the high season is over, accommodation and flights become much more affordable.

October

October is when autumn truly settles in the Algarve. Temperatures remain pleasant, averaging 22–24°C (72-75°F), with very occasional rain showers. It’s an ideal time for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and exploring scenic coastal landscapes. The region feels calmer and more authentic. Because it’s quiet, October is a wonderful time for a cycling tour in the Algarve : starting from Faro, to Tavira, then riding beside the Guadiana River, the natural border with Spain, and continuing along the Vicentine Coast, all the way to Cape Saint Vincent. For wine enthusiasts and lovers of oenology, October is a great time to visit, as it coincides with the grape harvest and lively vineyard celebrations. Accommodation and flights are often around 30% cheaper than during the summer months, making October a great option for travelers seeking both good weather and better prices.

November

In many parts of the world, November can feel grey and gloomy , but not in the Algarve. Planning a trip to the south of Portugal at this time of year is a great way to soak up some late-season sunshine. Although temperatures become cooler and occasional rain may appear, the region still enjoys many sunny days. The atmosphere becomes quieter, making it a great time for travelers who enjoy peaceful landscapes and slow exploration. Planning a cycling trip in the Algarve in November is exciting, as cycling not only gives the freedom to explore at a relaxed pace, but also brings so much more ! Because it is firmly the low season, holidays in the Algarve during November remain very affordable.

Winter in the Algarve: between calm and festivities

Late November

Late November reveals the Algarve’s quieter towns and mild Atlantic climate. Coastal walks remain enjoyable, and small villages showcase early Christmas markets and festive decorations.

December

December combines mild weather with festive events, including Faro Christmas Market. Visitors can taste seasonal flavors, traditional Portuguese dishes, and soak up the holiday atmosphere in the Algarve.  Coastal walks and countryside trails are still accessible. Winter in the Algarve suits travelers seeking peaceful yet culturally rich experiences, with accommodations remaining reasonably priced except during peak holiday periods.

January

January is the quietest month in the Algarve, with serene landscapes and empty beaches. It’s perfect for slow travel, nature walks, and photography, while charming Portuguese towns provide insight into local culture. In Sagres, a small museum is dedicated to Portuguese Great Maritime Discoveries, in the early fifteenth century. The low season in South Portugal ensures highly competitive rates for flights and lodging, making it one of the best periods to visit the Algarve without the crowds.

February

February signals the start of spring in the Algarve, with longer days and mild temperatures. Coastal and inland trails are ideal for walking, cycling, and outdoor exploration. Although hikes in the Algarve are accessible to everyone, it is recommended to wear good shoes to make the most of it. This guide helps in choosing the right shoes for a walking trip. Local events include Carnival festivities such as Loulé Carnival, one of the oldest in Portugal. During this time,  the Algarve turns into a celebration of colors, music, and joy. This is an excellent time to plan Algarve holidays for travelers interested in nature, local culture, and off-season experiences, with affordable accommodation and transportation.
