This circular hike starts near Auberge du Ried and follows well-marked trails through forests and upland pastures to the summit of Petit Ballon (1,272m) — one of the most iconic peaks in the Vosges. While slightly lower than the Grand Ballon, the region’s highest point, Petit Ballon offers uninterrupted views over the Alsace plain and surrounding mountains. The descent passes several traditional farm inns and historical landmarks before returning to the start via quiet woodland paths. A varied and rewarding mid-mountain hike. Upon returning to Auberge du Ried, be sure to enjoy a classic local blueberry tart — a perfect way to conclude your day.
