A succession of aqueducts, bridges and tunnels allow you to access the "window of hell", a natural cavity dug into the cliff by the many springs that gush out of it. A little part of the world worth the detour, with luxuriant forest and the domain of the crested newts (Triturus cristatus) that you will be able to observe in various phases of their life cycle.
Walk : Loop Rota de Agua | 2h30 | 8.5km - 5 miles | Elevation : +240m/-240m

It is on this fascinating island that you will spend the next 2 days.

At a higher altitude level than the other hikes, the effort is rewarded by a magical lava universe and a panoramic view of the ocean and the islands.
Walk : 7h |Elevation :+1100m/- 1100 m

Frei Matias hike: a hike on the western slope of Mount Pico, on the edge of pastures and orange & banana crops and vineyards. Today, Lajes leaves its old watchtowers, whale processing factories and frail hunting boats to tourism. Continue to the eastern tip of the island to Manhena with the possibility of taking a short stroll along a fishermen's path in the middle of the roped lava. Continue to São Roque, then Santa Luzia and its vineyards classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

In 1957, in the open sea one kilometre from the western end of the island, a volcanic eruption took place that lasted a year. The emergence of volcanoes, the accumulation of lava and ash formed a peninsula connecting the land and burying the fishing village of Capelinhos. An impressive lunar site, dominated by the remains of the lighthouse which now houses a vulcanology interpretation centre in the basement (visit not included). Transfer back to Horta.

The panoramic walk along the crater gives you an outstanding vantage point over the island, the ocean and the islands of Pico and São Jorge. The path down the northern slope to the village of Praia da Norte goes through some stunning forests, follows a Levada – an irrigation canal – and hortensia adorned pastures.
