Cycling from Van Gogh's Provence to the Luberon: Day by day

Day 1 - Avignon and the Pope's palace

  • Your trip begins in the heart of Avignon.
    A medieval town on the banks of the mighty Rhône River, Avignon hides many treasures: the Pope’s palace, the 12th century bridge, the 14th century ramparts, still intact, and many museums and churches. Meander through a labyrinth of cobbled streets and discover cafés in open squares, shaded by plane trees.

Day 2 - A Monastery hidden in the thyme-laden hills

  • Ride - Avignon > Barbentane > Saint Rémy 
    35km / 21.8 miles - Ascent: +250 m / Descent: -200 m
  • You start your biking itinerary through a mosaic of orchards and cypress trees, and cycle into the quaint village of Barbentane before climbing up on the “Montagnette” – literally “little mountain” – with wide-sweeping views of the plains, and scent of roasting pine needles and aromatic herbs.  At the back of the Montagnette lies the monastery of St. Michel de Frigolet. You continue through the charming villages of Graveson and Maillane before reaching Saint Rémy de Provence, an artists' town where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life.

Day 3 - The perched Baux de Provence

  • Leaving St. Rémy, you can visit Saint Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life. Biking along the winding streets of the the Alpilles mountains, in landscapes of pine trees and wildflowers, you reach Les Baux de Provence, a town perched vertiginously atop a rocky crag, crowned by the ruins of its feudal castle - listed among the most beautiful villages in France.

Day 4 - From St Remy to the Luberon perched villages

    44km / 27.3 miles - Ascent: +300 m / Descent: -200 m
  • Your cycling trip continues as you head into the plains to the east, towards the lost village of Eygalières, surrounded by vast olive groves. Through farmlands and endless orchards, you cross the Durance river. On the opposite bank, you are met by Cavaillon, bursting with locally grown fruits and vegetables. Settle into your accommodation for 2 nights, in the heart of the Luberon.

    Day 5 - Peter Mayle Luberon

      48km / 29.8 miles - Ascent: +700 m / Descent: -700 m
    • Today’s biking journey takes you through the landscapes of Peter Mayle, where perched villages are joined by small country roads, old shepherd’s huts, cherry orchards, and truffle oak plantations. Reach the tiny perched hamlet of Oppede le vieux, then the village of Ménerbes, with its massive stone homes sitting vertiginously above a ledge and its "wine and truffle museum". Then is the village of Bonnieux with its tiny squares and its cobbled steps to the 12th century church. Finally, on the way back to Cabrieres, stop by Lacoste, passing by the imposing ruins of the castle of the famous Marquis de Sade.

    Day 6 - Gordes and Roussillon: two of the most beautiful villages in France

    • Ride - Cabrieres or Oppede > Goult > Roussillon > Gordes > Isle sur Sorgue 
      50km / 31.1 miles - Ascent: +800 m / Descent: -900 m
    • You cycle up to Goult, a timeless village untouched by modern tourism. Then Roussillon, sitting atop the world’s largest ochre deposit. The village homes are painted with ochre pigment: take the time to explore the abandoned ochre quarry, with sands and dunes in every colour. Six km farther is the village of Gordes, its noble grey stone homes winding up in dizzying circles to the renaissance castle that crowns the village. Cycling above the valley, through landscapes of pine and cedar forests, you slowly make your way down to l’Isle sur la Sorgue, veritable island of a village, completely encircled by the clear green waters of the Sorgue river.

      Ride - Isle sur la Sorgue > Pernes les Fontaines > Venasque > Isle sur la Sorgue - 40 km/24.8 miles - +650m/-650m
      This  ride takes you to Pernes-les-Fontaines, with its 40 fountains, its Romanesque church, its mansions. You then explore the peaceful landscapes and the perched villages of the Monts de Vaucluse, northern Luberon. Venasque, a medieval town, is labelled as one of “the most beautiful villages of France”. See the book/extension section

    Day 7 - Isle, a village framed by the river
