WEATHER
Provence is famous for its 360 days of sunshine per year ! The Provençal climate is characterized by the bright and ever-present sun, and dry summers. The winds and rains are sporadic.
- Winter is most often mild and sunny, with incredibly clear skies.
- Autumn & Spring, with their summer-like days, can sometimes bring more abundant rains. A great hiking and cycling season !
- May and June, when almond trees and lavender fields are in bloom, are the most pleasant months, followed by September and October.
- Summer is very hot and dry. Walking is great in the interior of Provence, above 1000m in altitude to avoid the heat, like the Cevennes, the back country of Nice, Mercantour nature park… Cycle through all of Provence in the mornings and late afternoons. - A Word about “Le Mistral” in Provence The strong north-western winds blow down the Rhône Valley, picking up speed as they head through Provence towards the Med, helping to keep the region very sunny. The Mistral generally blows in the winter and spring and considerably less during the warmer months.
ELECTRICITY
Europe is on a 220 Volt system . Check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items HERE
MOBILE PHONE & INTERNET
Please check that your mobile/cell plan allows for calls & messages abroad
A good option is to buy a “country Sim card” in a phone shop. It will cost you around 10€ / 15€ and will allow you to call local phone numbers with internet access
MONEY MATTERS & CLOSING HOURS
The currency is the €uro. Please ensure to have some cash with you as there aren’t always ATM machines in small villages.
Tips are always included (different than in Canada and USA) but always appreciated.
Please note that many restaurants in France do not serve food all day
Many shops are closed on Sundays, supermarkets are usually open until midday
FAQ
Do hotels have a safe storage for our bikes during the cycling trip in Provence?
All hotels we work with are cyclist-friendly and understand the needs of riders. It's common to find secure bike storage rooms, dedicated bike racks, or even basic repair facilities.
What personal equipment do you recommend for our daily cycling rides ?
Water – One of the biggest challenges in Provence during summer is the intense heat. Make sure your bike has two bottle cages and carry 2 litres / person.
Sun Cream – The southern sun is strong, and you’ll burn faster than you might expect. Don’t forget often-missed spots like the backs of your hands if you're not wearing gloves.
Windbreaker – While it may be hot in the valleys, temperatures can drop quickly as you climb. Weather conditions can change fast, and descents can feel chilly—pack a lightweight windbreaker just in case.
Snacks – If you're spending a full day on the bike, energy bars and gels are a smart choice to keep your energy levels up.
Mobile Phone – A phone is essential to upload the GPS file of your ride, to follow the route. All our bikes are equipped with a smartphone holder
What is your advice for cycling in Provence ?
Ride Responsibly – Stay on the hard shoulder whenever possible. If you're cycling in a group, ride no more than two abreast. Avoid risky maneuvers and always obey local traffic laws.
Respect Nature – Provence’s landscapes are beautiful but ecologically sensitive. Do not leave litter, and never light fires, especially in wooded areas where the risk of wildfires is high.
Private Property – Do not enter private land without the explicit permission of the owner.
Avoid the Midday Heat – During summer, try to avoid cycling during the hottest part of the day. Always carry plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and bring a hat for rest stops.
Why choose to travel by bike outside the peak season?
April & October are 2 of the best months for a cycling trip in Provence. The weather is glorious without being too hot, so no early starts necessary! There are fewer crowds in the touristy areas, you are far from the hustle and bustle of high season.
